Coffee table art book This large, hard cover book is gorgeous and the artwork superb.

Beatrice Bulteau is a French artist living in Portugal for decades. She is a premiere artist of the Lusitano horse and captures their likeness perfectly.

ART OF THE LUSITANO by Pedro Yglesias de Oliveira (English Edition) Hardcover – January 16, 2012, 144 pp.

This lovely book re-creates the images found in the “Enlightenment on the Free and Noble Art of Equitation, 1790” as well as backdrops of modern art and pairs them with dressage riders and their mounts. The photographic effects of these pairings are striking. Out of print.

Gallop to Freedom, Training Horses with our Six Golden Principles by Magaili Delgado, Frederic Pignon with David Walser. 2009, 182 pp.

This inspirational book is included in this collection, as the Lusitano horse is featured heavily in the writings and photographs. Pignon’s Lusitanos are a testament to his training methodologies, as well as to the mind and characteristics of the Lusitano horse.

(Lusitano Champions - Historic memory 1966-2003) paperback by AA.VV., 2005, republished in 2016.The present book, whose technical responsibility is of the Portuguese Lusitano Horse Breeders Association (APSL), has as main objective to concentrate in a single publication all the results of the Model and Progress contests held.

APSL Breeders Catalogue with English translations. 2016 and 2011 Editions, 130 pp.

These catalogs are very helpful for anyone who wishes to know more about the current breeding operations in Portugal. It also includes a list of members to the APSL, including their email addresses and their brands. Available on the APSL website.

The Lusitano Ancestral Horse of South West Europe: The Breed and it’s Breeders by Joao Costa-Ferreira. 2005, 416 pp. Out of print.

For the serious breeder, this is a “must-have” book. It is a wealth of information, that can’t be found elsewhere. Of most importance is the back pages, which are the English translation of the text. Each major breeder in Portugal (about 75 in total) is listed with a description of the breeding farm, their management style and what they are breeding for. This extensive collection of breeders and their breeding program is extraordinarily helpful, up until 2004. The front portion of the book is in Portuguese with lavish photographs.

The Veiga line of the pure Portuguese Horse is the subject of this book. From its foundation 190 years ago to today. The 190 year history of the Veiga stud farm Quinta da Broa, Golegã , it's people and its horses. The creation of the most significant line of pure bred Lusitano horses. Breeding philosophy and standards that led to todays recognized type, quality and consistency. With in-depth contributions by Alvaro Domecq Romero, Arsénio Raposo, Conchita Cintron, Don Diogo de Bragança, this is a definitive must-read for any admirer of Iberian Lusitano horses. The historic photographs found in the book are a treasure-trove of information.

Le cheval Lusitanien, Elevage et traditions equestres au Portugal, Editions Lariviere. By Laetitia Boulin-Neel. 2004, 280 pp. Out of Print.

This book is not translated into English and although the extensive collection of photographs accompanying the text are good, it sadly has little use as a reference for those that only speak English. Out of print.

Lusitano Son of the Wind by Arsénio Cordeiro Raposo. Paperback. 2004, 229 pp. Available on the APSL Website.

This book is a highly recommended book on the Portuguese horse. The history and tradition of the Lusitano horse is told in over 200 photos and prints in color, as well as a written narrative.

The photo collection also shows the incredible versatility of the Lusitano horse.

The Royal Horse of Europe: The Story of The Andalusian And Lusitano (Allen Breed Series) by Sylvia Loch. Hardcover. 1999, new edition 2019. 254 pp.

This book focusses on both the “Andalusian” and the Lusitano, often goes off into tangents unrelated to the subject or the Lusitano, is a classic on the history of the Iberian horse, from the perspective of the author.

Alter Real 1748- 1998, by Gemma Antonetta va Dijk. Hardcover 1999, 161 pg. Out of print.

This book pays homage to the Alter Real (Alter do Chao, Portugl), King’s Stud which has been in existence since 1748. The quality of photographs is not as crisp or clear, due to the quality of the book and the text is sparse. But for the lover of the Lusitano, it is another reference book worth having.
